Design a Container Scheduler · System Design Interview

Design a Container SchedulerDesign the control plane that places containers onto a fleet of hosts, keeps the requested number of them running, and rolls out a new version without dropping traffic. What it has to do

A team declares a service, its image and how many copies of it should run

Copies are placed on hosts that have room, spread so one host failing does not take all of them

A copy on a failed host is replaced elsewhere

A new version replaces the old one gradually, and stops if the new one is unhealthy

Scale

Hosts: 5,000

Containers running: 400,000

Out of scope

Container networking

Image storage

Autoscaling on load
